Itinerary details

☆ Depart from Reykjavik and head to the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel. ☆ Arrive at the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel. The cave is about 1,340 meters long. We’ll enter the lava tunnel through its narrow opening, where you’ll see extraordinary lava formations in an astonishing variety of shapes and colors. The cave features natural stalactites and remarkably varied formations. At times it is spacious and level, and at others narrow and winding; in some places, you may even need to crawl to get through. We recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots for walking over the uneven volcanic rock. Explore deeper into the cave to find three tunnels in its farthest section. Hot lava once flowed here, and 5,000 years ago it collected and formed the long, narrow cave. Over time, magnificent lava falls and uniquely shaped lava rocks formed, creating a colorful underground world. ☆ At the end of the tour, return to Reykjavik. Tour duration: 3 hours
