Day 2
Auckland - Waitomo - New Plymouth
Itinerary details
Visit the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. This remarkable cave was discovered by a Māori chief in 1887. Take a boat ride across the underground lake and admire the romantic spectacle of glowworms twinkling like stars across the night sky. Your tour leader will also explain the glowworms’ ecology. After lunch, visit Three Sisters Beach on the north coast of Taranaki. This beautiful black-sand beach faces the vast Tasman Sea and is marked by two rocks (formerly three), each rising 25 meters high—the famous Three Sisters Rocks. Nearby are Elephant Rock and Six Toes. One fallen “sister” has been weathered into colorful pebbles of various sizes, while a new “sister” is slowly separating from the coastline. The entire beach resembles a magical world from a painting by Dalí. (We recommend bringing wet wipes to clean your feet.) The visit will be scheduled in coordination with the itinerary on Day 3, depending on the daily tides. Arrive in New Plymouth in the evening, known as New Zealand’s Texas. The city is famous for its sunny climate, art galleries, and beautiful parks. It is also New Zealand’s oil town, with offshore rigs extracting natural gas and crude oil. The ever-present Mount Taranaki, graffiti-covered streets, art galleries, the Fishbone Bridge walkway, and coastal charm create a vivid backdrop throughout the city. Its vibrant arts scene earned it a place among New Zealand’s hottest check-in destinations on Xiaohongshu in 2022. Stay overnight in New Plymouth. For dinner, we recommend trying one of the lively restaurants near Devon Street or the art galleries; the reasonable prices and generous portions are sure to satisfy.

Day 3
New Plymouth - Mount Taranaki - New Plymouth
Itinerary details
Depart town at 8:00 a.m. and drive through the small town of Stratford before ascending Mount Taranaki from its southern side. Pass through a forest “tunnel” reminiscent of a Hayao Miyazaki animated film and reach the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre halfway up the mountain. Enjoy an hour-long walk along moss-covered forest trails to visit Dawson Falls, fed by snowmelt from the volcano’s summit, and look for little orange mushrooms among the trees. If the weather is clear, be sure to climb to the lookout behind the visitor centre restrooms for a clear view of the Tasman Sea to the east and Mount Ruapehu, the great volcano in the center of New Zealand’s North Island, to the west. The spectacular scenery is sure to impress. In the afternoon, visit Cape Egmont Lighthouse at the peninsula’s westernmost point. The lighthouse was built in London in the mid-19th century and later transported to New Zealand. Take a memorable photo beside the lighthouse with the great volcano in the background. Return to New Plymouth in the evening.

New Plymouth - Matamata - Rotorua
Itinerary details
After breakfast, stroll along the artistic Fishbone Bridge walkway and admire the Tasman Sea and magnificent Mount Taranaki. Visit Hobbiton, the filming location for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, in the center of the North Island, and step into the astonishing movie set. Walk in the footsteps of the characters and experience the real Middle-earth. Follow your guide on a drive through a 1,250-acre sheep farm, enjoying the magnificent views stretching toward the Kaimai Ranges and marveling at nature’s handiwork. The Hobbit Holes, Green Dragon Inn, mill, Party Tree, and more will keep you captivated as you listen to the legendary stories behind the hobbits. Arrive in Rotorua in the afternoon, a Māori heartland and geothermal capital. In the evening, ride the Skyline Gondola for panoramic views of Rotorua. Enjoy a buffet meal at a five-star restaurant with scenic views, and you can also try the Skyline Luge at your own expense.

Day 5
Rotorua
Itinerary details
After breakfast, visit the 350-acre Agrodome, home to one of New Zealand’s most traditional and largest farm shows. Experience authentic farm life, get up close with a variety of farm animals, and visit the organic orchard to sample farm produce. Ride a farm tractor and say hello to the friendly animals. You can hand-feed different breeds of sheep, goats, llamas, miniature horses, alpacas, and ostriches. The visit ends with an entertaining sheepdog show and a fast-paced shearing demonstration. Then enjoy a generous farm BBQ buffet at the restaurant, with its wide-open views! Visit Te Puia, a Māori cultural village rich in local character. It is the birthplace of New Zealand’s Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and home to world-famous geysers. Discover its renowned Indigenous culture and stunning geothermal landscape. Hot springs and mud pools abound, steam rises everywhere, and the air is filled with a strong sulfur smell. Walking through the geothermal area feels like moving through the clouds. Visit the kiwi conservation house for a close encounter with New Zealand’s national treasure. Immerse yourself in nature and breathe deeply in the Redwood Forest. In the evening, stroll along the shores of Lake Rotorua and visit Government Gardens. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and experience Rotorua’s distinctive atmosphere. Visit the Polynesian Spa, one of the world’s top ten hot springs and a renowned wellness retreat, and experience the therapeutic effects of its mineral waters on your skin and joints. Nearly 30 mineral pools are fed by two different natural springs: the acidic water helps relieve aches and pains, while the alkaline water nourishes the skin.
