Itinerary details
Kirkenes is known as Norway’s king crab capital. Today, this delicacy has become a major export. This crustacean originally came from Russia and can reach 2 meters in diameter and weigh up to 15 kilograms. The king crab we usually catch here in Kirkenes weighs around 7 kilograms. From May 1 to November 30, we use our RIB boat to reach the fishing grounds (depending on the weather, snowmobiles may be used at the beginning and end of the season). When the sea is no longer covered with ice, we use our RIB boats. The RIB boat trip itself is an action-packed adventure. When we reach our destination, you can take photos of these fascinating creatures. You can also help haul the crab pots out of the sea. The day's catch will be served at the end of the tour in our rustic boathouse restaurant. Are you ready to venture into the Barents Sea for a true Arctic fishing experience and taste the freshest king crab you can imagine? This tour includes round-trip transfers from the Thon or Scandic hotel in Kirkenes—just let us know which one you prefer. Our driver will pick you up at the Thon or Scandic hotel and take you to the king crab dock in Kirkenes. Here, your guide will help you get dressed and give you safety instructions before you head out to sea by boat. The trip will stop by the fishing boats in Kirkenes, where you will learn about king crab fishing, as well as other fishing and maritime topics. Then we will head out into the fjord to visit World War II battle sites, where our guide will tell you stories about the war. Afterwards, we’ll pull up the cages used to catch king crabs and head across the fjord to “The Other Side,” our rustic boathouse restaurant opposite Kirkenes Fjord. Here, you can take photos with the freshly caught king crabs while coffee or tea is served as they cook. The crab legs are prepared in the traditional style of Northern Norway and served with bread, butter, mayonnaise and lemon. Our expert will also show you how to crack open crab legs like a king or queen. Guests can order drinks such as wine, beer or mineral water at their own expense at the table. After the meal, we’ll return to the fjord and head back to Kirkenes, then drop you off at the pickup point. No guide information is provided for this tour. Please refer to your confirmation for the pickup location.
