Itinerary details
Depart from your hotel in downtown Cairo at around 7:00–8:00 to begin your Black and White Desert tour. Please check out in advance and arrange your own breakfast. Arrive at 【Bahariya Oasis】 at around 12:30 and enjoy a local-style lunch at a local home. After lunch, transfer to a 4WD vehicle and head to the Black and White Desert. Arrive at the 【Black Desert】 at around 14:00 and begin exploring this mysterious region. Visit the remains of black volcanic craters and the unusual volcanic rock formations nearby at your leisure. The distinctive black color comes from basalt particles left by volcanic activity that cover the desert surface. The area has a mysterious, dusky black hue that contrasts sharply with the familiar yellow desert. The Black Desert’s terrain was shaped by volcanic activity and wind erosion, creating patches of black dunes and rock. After spending around 30 minutes in the Black Desert, head to 【Crystal Mountain】, near the Black Desert, where crystals are still forming. Natural minerals are found throughout the area, including calcite crystals in various shapes, such as columns, caves, and trees, formed naturally through cycles of heat and cold in the desert climate and the interaction of minerals and rock. Visitors can see large crystal columns exposed above the ground, sparkling in the sunlight and making a spectacular sight. You can also pick up a few small pieces to take home as souvenirs. After spending around 20 minutes at Crystal Mountain, head to 【Agabat Valley】. Located between the Black and White Deserts, Agabat Valley was underwater tens of millions of years ago. You can explore fossilized seashells in the valley’s sedimentary rocks. Continue to the 【White Desert】 area (explore for around 1 hour). Along the way, you’ll see more and more white fossils. Arrive at the White Desert at around 16:00. The White Desert is famous for its creamy, snow-white limestone rocks, weathered over thousands of years into all kinds of unusual shapes, including the well-known “chicken and mushroom stew,” “Camel Rock,” “Tent Area,” “White Rabbit,” and other surreal formations. The White Desert is in Egypt’s western Farafra Oasis, 45 km north of Farafra. Its creamy, snow-white sand stands out against the surrounding yellow desert. Towering chalk formations rise from the White Desert like giant mushrooms, sculpted by thousands of years of sandstorms. Return to the camp near the Black Desert at around 17:00, enjoying the boundless tranquility of the desert along the way. At the camp, try 【desert sandboarding】 and 【watch the desert sunset】. Dusk seeps through the folds of the dunes; the last echoes of camel bells have long since been crumbled by the wind, and the setting sun, like honey about to melt, slowly burns into the horizon. After sunset, enjoy a 【Bedouin-style campfire dinner】 cooked by your guide. At night, 【take in the vast desert night sky】 beneath a sea of stars. Lie on a carpet and sip black tea as you experience the quiet, light-pollution-free desert night. Here, every star seems to tell an ancient story. The desert night is silent; the wind blows gently, whispering through the sand—the gentlest lullaby nature has to offer. Look up and it seems you could touch the edge of the universe. Beneath this starry sky, the Milky Way is clearly visible, so beautiful it defies description. It inspires thoughts about the meaning of life and the mysteries of the universe. Perhaps we are just a grain of sand in the universe, yet we each have our own light.
