Itinerary details
Accompanied by a professional guide, you’ll explore Salzburg’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town and the stunning location featured in the opening scenes of The Sound of Music! This Salzburg Sound of Music tour includes the following iconic film locations: • Mirabell Gardens and Pegasus Fountain - The setting for the scene where Maria and the children dance joyfully • Nonnberg Abbey (drive-by) - The abbey where Maria was a novice • Schloss Leopoldskron (viewed from across the lake) - The von Trapp family home in the film, now a luxury hotel • Hellbrunn Palace - Filming location for the singing scene in the movie • Gazebo (now located within Hellbrunn Palace) - The romantic setting of Captain von Trapp and Maria’s first kiss • Mondsee Church - The sacred venue where Maria and the Captain were married The Broadway musical The Sound of Music, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, premiered in 1959 and was a huge success. This prompted director Robert Wise to bring a crew of 250 to Salzburg and the surrounding area in 1964 to film the movie. It was the local tour operator that took the film crew to the various locations to make this classic film. The film was an instant hit upon its release, winning five Academy Awards and setting a box-office record at the time. Over the years, it has become a timeless classic. Both the musical and the film were adapted from Maria von Trapp’s 1949 book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. In Salzburg, visitors can follow the real-life footsteps of the von Trapp family and explore iconic filming locations from The Sound of Music. The tour begins in the Aigen district at the von Trapp family home (now a private residence, viewable from the outside only), then continues to historic Nonnberg Abbey, where Maria was a novice before becoming governess to the von Trapp family. The famous Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mirabell Gardens (the filming location for the children singing “Do-Re-Mi”) are also included. You will also visit the formal gardens of Schloss Leopoldskron (the filming location for the rear of the von Trapp family home) and Hellbrunn Palace, where the iconic gazebo scenes were filmed. Our “Original Sound of Music Tour” artfully combines the real-life story of the von Trapp family with the film’s picturesque locations. Expert commentary brings the legendary family’s daily life to life and reveals the story behind the filming of this world-famous movie, blending cultural heritage with cinematic art. Follow in the footsteps of the von Trapp family on a journey through Salzburg and its hidden gems. Stroll through iconic film locations and imagine yourself as Maria, portrayed by Julie Andrews. As you relive memorable scenes from the movie, admire Salzburg’s historic architectural treasures and the lakes region’s stunning scenery. Relax to the original Sound of Music soundtrack as you wander, and feel free to hum along to classics like “Edelweiss”... Your expert guide will share fascinating stories about the movie’s production, the von Trapp family, the filming locations, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes.
