In the spring of 1933, Germany’s first Nazi concentration camp opened northeast of Dachau. It was initially intended to hold political prisoners, but soon became a model for other concentration camps. It was also used as an SS training center: a “school of violence.” This tour takes you from central Munich to the historic Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. Led by a professionally trained guide, you’ll explore this memorial to one of history’s most heinous crimes. Over the years, Dachau Concentration Camp developed into a system of nearly 100 satellite camps. During its 12 years of existence, more than 200,000 people from across Europe were imprisoned there, and an estimated 41,500 were killed. On April 29, 1945, the U.S. Army liberated Dachau Concentration Camp, ending more than a decade of atrocities. Across Nazi-occupied Europe, the Allies ended the reign of terror and brought the Third Reich’s barbarity to an end. The liberation of the concentration camps revealed to the world the full brutality of the Nazi German concentration camp system. In 1965, at the initiative of concentration camp survivors, the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site was established on the grounds of the former camp. Nearly 800,000 people visit each year. The memorial site is close to Dachau’s old town, just around 12 miles (20 km) northwest of Munich. Our specially trained guides will take you through the historic grounds of the former concentration camp. The surviving original buildings and reconstructed sites bear witness to its brutal history. Your guide on the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site tour will share fascinating historical facts and background. You’re welcome to ask our guides questions during the tour. All our guides have received specialized training from the memorial site. They will discuss this disturbing subject with dignity, sensitivity, and respect for the victims. The Dachau Concentration Camp tour introduces you to the brutal atrocities of the Nazi regime, including human medical experiments, torture, and mass executions.
