Itinerary details
For nearly a thousand years, Nuremberg (German: Nürnberg) has played a pivotal role in Germany’s history. From the Holy Roman Empire to the German Renaissance, from the Third Reich to modern Bavaria, the city has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. We’ll introduce you to its long history and take you to the colorful market, which has been the heart of Nuremberg since the 14th century. We’ll also show you where to try the famous Nuremberg bratwurst and the so-called “red beer,” or amber lager. You’ll have free time to explore the Old Town, enjoy views from the courtyard of the Imperial Castle, visit the carefully restored Gothic Church of St. Sebald, or simply relax over lunch and soak up the atmosphere. After lunch, we’ll take you to the former Nazi rally grounds in Nuremberg to explore the city’s dark history. On the southeastern edge of the city, Hitler’s architect Albert Speer planned and began constructing what was originally called the “Temple City of the Third Reich.” The Nazis held rallies here, received salutes from the crowds, and featured the grounds in propaganda films, creating some of the most infamous images in human history. You’ll find yourself among the largest surviving complex of Third Reich structures in the world, while your guide explains how the city confronts this difficult past today. Not sure if you want to explore this history? No problem. You can choose to spend your free time in the Old Town instead. Nuremberg has a long history. It was not only influential during the Nazi regime, but also the unofficial capital of the First German Empire and therefore a center of cultural and intellectual exchange. It also played an important role in the Reformation and the scientific and printing revolutions. On our day trip from Munich to Nuremberg, our guide will tell you all about this historic city.
