After breakfast, visit Arrowtown, 21 kilometres from Queenstown. Many of Arrowtown’s historic buildings have been well preserved, and some are still in everyday use. Stroll along the Arrow River and reflect on the hardships faced by the thousands of Chinese miners who once lived here. The modest village where they lived still stands beside the river. Buckingham Street is the main street, reflecting the efforts of local residents to preserve the town’s prosperous past. Old buildings line the street, now home to a variety of shops and restaurants. In the afternoon, head to Lake Wanaka, New Zealand’s fourth-largest lake. Surrounded by the majestic Southern Alps, Lake Wanaka is a hidden paradise where you can immerse yourself in a world apart. Take a stroll along the lake, or rent a bicycle to ride around it, admiring the crystal-clear water and experiencing the lively local atmosphere. Travel to Tekapo, a stargazing town, to admire the beautiful Lake Tekapo, one of the South Island’s most scenic destinations for starry skies and lakeside views. Look up at the sky in Tekapo and watch star clusters twinkle and the Milky Way stream overhead; you’ll feel as if you are surrounded by the stars. After enjoying a delicious salmon set meal in the evening, stay in a distinctive lakeside holiday home. Visit a world-famous dark-sky reserve to see the vast, pristine starry sky. Auckland - Waitomo Caves - New Plymouth
Itinerary details
Visit the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a remarkable cave system discovered by a Māori chief in 1887. Take a boat ride across the underground lake and admire the romantic sight of glowworms twinkling like stars across the ceiling, while your tour leader explains their ecology. After lunch, head to Three Sisters Beach on the north coast of Taranaki. This beautiful black-sand beach faces the vast Tasman Sea and is home to two (formerly three) towering, 25-metre-high rock formations known as the famous Three Sisters. Nearby are Elephant Rock and Six Toes. One of the fallen “sisters” has been weathered into colorful pebbles of various sizes, while a new “sister” is slowly separating from the coast. The whole beach looks like a surreal world painted by Dalí. (We recommend bringing wet wipes to clean your feet. Visits to this attraction are arranged according to the daily tides and coordinated with the following day’s itinerary.) Arrive in the evening in New Plymouth, New Zealand’s Texas. New Plymouth is known for its sunny climate, art galleries, and beautiful parks. It is also New Zealand’s oil town, with offshore rigs extracting natural gas and crude oil. Mount Taranaki, graffiti-covered streets, art galleries, the Fishbone Bridge Walkway, and seaside wind sculptures come together to create a vivid backdrop for the city. Its vibrant arts scene makes it no surprise that it was named one of New Zealand’s hottest new check-in destinations on Xiaohongshu in 2022. Overnight in New Plymouth. For dinner, we recommend trying a lively restaurant near Devon Street or the art gallery; you’re sure to be pleased with the reasonable prices and generous portions.

Take a one-hour walk along moss-covered forest trails to visit Dawson Falls, fed by snowmelt from the volcano’s summit, and look for little orange mushrooms among the trees. If the weather is clear, be sure to climb to the lookout behind the visitor centre restrooms for clear views of the Tasman Sea to the east and Mount Ruapehu, the great volcano in the center of New Zealand’s North Island, to the west. The spectacular scenery is sure to amaze you. In the afternoon, visit Cape Egmont Lighthouse at the westernmost tip of the peninsula.
