At the heart of the ancient citadel on the Acropolis in Greece’s capital, Athens, a monumental rectangular building rises from a limestone hill. Standing at the highest point of the Acropolis, this is the world-famous Parthenon, also known as the Temple of Parthenon. After more than two thousand years of change, its roof has collapsed, its statues have disappeared, and its reliefs have suffered severe erosion. Yet its imposing colonnade still offers a glimpse of the temple’s former grandeur. The Parthenon, also rendered as “Temple of Parthenon,” is the most important main building on the Acropolis of Athens. Its name comes from Athena’s epithet Parthenon, a transliteration of the Greek ∏αρθενωσ, meaning “virgin.” The Parthenon is built in the Doric order.

The Theatre of Dionysus in Athens is located on the south side of the Acropolis. The two semicircular theatres are connected by a colonnade, fully reflecting the ancient Greeks’ love of the arts. The Theatre of Herodes Atticus on the west side is still used for open-air summer concerts and theatrical performances, while the Theatre of Dionysus on the east side is open to visitors as an attraction. Built in the 5th century BC, it was originally a place to pray to Dionysus.

The Erechtheion is an ancient Greek architectural monument and one of the main buildings of the Acropolis of Athens. It is located north of the Parthenon. Its famous Caryatid columns have long been regarded as an architectural marvel. Five original Caryatids are now housed in the Acropolis Museum, while the missing sixth is kept in the British Museum.
