Itinerary details
Start today's beautiful journey 08:00 Under the BEAMS sign in front of the Shin-Marunouchi Building at JR Tokyo Station Address: Shin-Marunouchi Building, 1 Chome−5−1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda City, Tokyo 100-6590, Japan 08:30 Shinjuku Mode Gakuen ※ The tour will depart on time. Please arrive at the meeting point 10 minutes before departure. 【10:00 Great Buddha of Kamakura (approx. 30 minutes; admission to the Great Buddha is at your own expense (300 yen; to enter the Great Buddha, an additional 50 yen is required))】 The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a bronze seated statue of Amida Buddha located at Kotoku-in, a Jodo Buddhist temple in the ancient capital of Kamakura. It is a symbol of the city. The statue stands 11.3 meters tall, or 13.35 meters including its pedestal, and weighs approximately 121 tons. Built in 1252, it features a relatively flat face, a low ushnisha, and a forward-leaning posture characteristic of Song-style Buddhist statues popular during the Kamakura period. It is a representative sculpture of that era and has been designated a National Treasure of Japan. Unlike the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple in Nara, which has undergone numerous repairs over the centuries, the Great Buddha of Kamakura has largely retained its original form, making it especially precious. Minamoto no Yoritomo established Japan's first samurai government, the Kamakura shogunate (1192–1333), in Kamakura. For 140 years, Kamakura was the center of Japan, experiencing significant growth in politics, economics, culture, and other areas. However, as the Muromachi shogunate established its central authority, Kamakura was marginalized and began to decline. In particular, following the Battle of Koga in Shimosa Province in 1455, Kamakura had dwindled to a village whose economy relied solely on agriculture and fishing. It was not until the middle of the Edo period, with the revival of shrines and temples, that Kamakura gradually developed into an important tourist destination in Japan. 【10:50 Enoden experience from Hase Station (approx. 15–20 minutes on foot to Hase Station; Enoden fare included)】 The Enoden is a streetcar connecting Fujisawa and Kamakura. Its route passes most of Kamakura's famous attractions and offers beautiful views of the Shonan coast. The Enoden is an essential mode of transport associated with Kamakura. Scenes of the train speeding by frequently appear in Japanese films and animated works. So don't just admire it from afar—enjoy the experience of riding the Enoden yourself. ※ Travel by Enoden from Hase Station to Kamakura-kōkō-mae Station and then to Enoshima Station Please be sure to stay with your guide on the way to board the tram. If you get separated along the way, you will be responsible for the consequences. This is a complimentary activity. If you are unable to ride the Enoden due to force majeure, the fee will not be refunded. 【11:00 Enoden Kamakura-kokomae Station railroad crossing (approx. 20 minutes)】 Kamakura High School is located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and is the inspiration for Ryonan High School in Slam Dunk. The crossing not far from the station is where the classic scene of Hanamichi Sakuragi greeting Haruko Akagi was filmed. Stand at the crossing and, amid the chime of the bells, you can feel the youthful passion and memories of Slam Dunk. Now, many years later, people who come here can’t help taking photos, as if to commemorate their own youth. I don’t think we’re here to bear witness to a memory. The sea, school, and streets in the world of Slam Dunk mean so much to everyone born in the 1980s. Being able to visit the places in our youthful memories and confirm they’re real—almost as if we can feel the breath of youth once more—gives us a little more peace of mind as we say BYE BYE to it. ☆Drive along the Shonan Coast (not included in the itinerary; viewed from the vehicle only) The Shonan Coast is the Enoden trundling through Kamakura’s quaint old streets; it’s the sound of waves rolling in as you lie on the beach; it’s the sea breeze you feel as a motorcycle roars and accelerates; it’s Hanamichi Sakuragi’s love for Haruko. It’s nostalgia. It’s passion.
Important notes
Please note: ① As these are public roads, please take care of your personal safety and do not disrupt traffic. ② Please do not enter the railway tracks or level crossings. 【11:50 Enoshima (approximately 110 minutes, free time)】 According to one account, Enoshima first began to form in April of the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei’s reign (552), when sand rose from the seabed and formed a sandbar after 21 days. However, Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei records a moving legend about the island’s origins. Long ago, it is said, a vast lake measuring 40 ri in circumference surrounded the area around Tsumura (present-day Kamakura), and a wicked five-headed dragon lived in the lake. Its rampages caused landslides, disease, floods, and typhoons. Unable to stop its evil deeds, people watched their villages fall into ruin. This gave rise to Koshigoe (now across from Enoshima). One day in the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei’s reign, dark clouds suddenly gathered over the sea, and the earth and sky shook. A beautiful fairy appeared in the clouds, and an island suddenly rose from the sea. The dragon fell in love with her at first sight, promised to stop its wicked ways, mend its conduct, and asked to marry her. Through tireless effort and continuous good deeds, it eventually won the fairy’s hand. From then on, the five-headed dragon worked with the gods to shape the island and protect its residents. The dragon is also said to be an incarnation of Benzaiten. Even Tokugawa Ieyasu came here to worship. During the Edo period, the island became a popular sightseeing destination for people from Edo (present-day Tokyo). Thanks to Benzaiten’s musical talents, it has also long been a favorite destination for kabuki actors. 【14:20 Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine (approximately 70 minutes)】 Formerly known as Kamakura Hachimangu, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine was the central object of faith and guardian deity for samurai during the Kamakura shogunate (1192). It has deep ties to Kamakura’s first shogun and is widely known throughout the Kanto region. Together with Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine (Kyoto) and Usa Hachimangu Shrine (Oita Prefecture, Kyushu), it is counted among Japan’s three great Hachimangu shrines. The shrine grounds are extensive, and several sites within them have been designated National Historic Sites. Many flowers and plants also grow here, making it a famous local spot for cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. It has also been awarded one star by the Michelin Green Guide. 【15:30】 Set off back to central Tokyo. The return time is for reference only; you may return earlier if the day’s itinerary goes smoothly or traffic conditions are good. 【17:30】 Arrive at Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi North Exit / Shinjuku Mode Gakuen, bringing the day’s itinerary to a pleasant end! ☆Tokyo Station (Tokyo Station Hotel) is located in the Marunouchi business district of Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. This multi-level station has platforms on two levels and currently serves the following lines: Tohoku Shinkansen, Yamagata Shinkansen, Akita Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen, Hokuriku Shinkansen, Tokaido Line, Chuo Line (Rapid), Sobu Line (Rapid), Yokosuka Line, Keiyo Line, Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, Narita Express, Tokaido Shinkansen, and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line (station code: M-17). It is not only the starting point for many of Japan’s railway lines, but also one of Tokyo’s major stations. The main building, the “Tokyo Station Red Brick Building,” is an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Renovated in 2012, it was restored to its present appearance, faithfully recreating the station building as it looked 100 years ago. ☆Shinjuku is one of Tokyo’s best-known bustling commercial districts. Its popular areas are mainly clustered around Shinjuku Station, including the Shinjuku, West, and South exits. A shoppers’ paradise, it offers everything from department stores and electronics shops to drugstores and trendy clothing stores. Department stores such as Odakyu, Keio, and Isetan are all good choices. Shinjuku is also home to Kabukicho, Japan’s most famous red-light district, with countless restaurants, bars, karaoke venues, and adult entertainment establishments. It is known as “Japan’s number one entertainment district.” Shinjuku Station is one of Tokyo’s most important transportation hubs, with nearly 4 million passenger journeys each day, making it the world’s busiest railway station. Other well-known attractions include Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a popular cherry-blossom viewing spot, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and Golden Gai.
