Day 2
Amman - Madaba - Amman
Itinerary details
Madaba is a historic town in Jordan, renowned for its well-preserved ancient mosaics. The mosaic sites in the area are mostly from the Byzantine and early Islamic periods, and are found mainly in churches and architectural ruins. Learning about Madaba’s historical and cultural background will help you gain a deeper understanding during your visit. Morning: ⭐St. George's Church: St. George's Church is famous for its “Mosaic Map,” which depicts the geographical layout of Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Nepal, Egypt, and other places in the 6th century AD. It is one of the key mosaic sites in Madaba and a highlight of your itinerary. ⭐Church of the Virgin Mary: This church also features exquisite mosaics, especially the floor mosaics depicting animals, people, and plants. They represent the artistic style of the Byzantine period and reflect the faith and artistic achievements of local residents. ⭐Church of St. John the Baptist: This church has a relatively long history. Although its mosaics are not as famous as those at St. George's Church, it remains one of the important historic sites in the Madaba region. Afternoon ⭐Madaba Archaeological Park and architectural ruins: In addition to churches, Madaba has several ancient architectural ruins. The archaeological park contains numerous mosaic sites and remains that represent the ancient civilizations of Jordan. Visiting these sites will help you better understand ancient Jordanian architecture and urban layout. ⭐In your free time between site visits, you can also stroll around the town of Madaba and experience the local atmosphere. Local handicrafts and mosaic crafts are distinctive and make excellent souvenirs to take home. ⭐Citadel Hill: Located in the center of Jordan's capital, Amman, Citadel Hill is one of the city's most important historic sites and lies at its heart. This historic hill was once a center for several civilizations, with cultural remains from the ancient Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. Today, Citadel Hill is not only a great place to learn about Amman's history, but also the best viewpoint for overlooking the entire city. Main attractions within Citadel Hill: ⭕Temple of Hercules: The Roman temple ruins on Citadel Hill are among Amman's most iconic historic sites, especially the temple's marble columns and the remains of the statue of Hercules. Although the temple is incomplete, you can still sense the grandeur of the ancient Roman period here. ⭕Umayyad Mosque: This mosque is an example of early Islamic architecture, and its simple yet imposing style complements Amman's other historic sites. ⭕Jordan Archaeological Museum: The museum houses a rich collection of archaeological artifacts, ranging from the Stone Age to the Islamic period, showcasing Jordan's long history and culture. Notably, it displays several replicas of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls. ⭕Byzantine church ruins: These Byzantine-period church ruins are another ancient religious site of significant historical value, illustrating religious life in Amman during the Byzantine Empire. Sunset (weather permitting) -- Citadel Hill is an ideal spot for photographing panoramic views of Amman, especially at sunset, when the scenery from the hilltop is particularly captivating.

Morning: ⭐Departing from Amman, we’ll drive to Qasr Amra in eastern Jordan. There are also several churches, some with well-preserved mosaic floors. Particularly notable is the mosaic floor in the Church of St. Stephen, which depicts the towns of the region. Two square towers may be the only surviving remains of the region’s famous ascetics, who practiced their devotions alone atop pillars or towers. Ancient agricultural remains are scattered around the Umm Qais archaeological site. Today, Umm Qais is a relatively peaceful tourist destination. Its remote location allows visitors to enjoy a tranquil historical visit. The ancient ruins and natural scenery attract visitors interested in history and archaeology.
