Itinerary details
Depart from Reykjavík in the morning. As we pass famous volcanoes such as Katla, Hekla, and Eyjafjallajökull, your guide will share lots of interesting facts. If the weather is clear that day, we may also see the Westman Islands off the South Coast. The first stop on this tour is the magnificent Seljalandsfoss. The waterfall plunges nearly 60 meters over a cliff, sending up a fine mist and creating an almost otherworldly scene. A path beside the waterfall leads around to the back, where you can admire this remarkable cascade from different angles. It’s an unforgettable experience. After another 30-minute drive, we’ll reach our next stop, another must-see on Iceland’s South Coast: Skógafoss. The waterfall is about 25 meters wide and 60 meters high. Although you can’t walk behind it, steps and a path on the right lead to the top. You can often see a colorful rainbow hanging over the falls from above—a truly spectacular sight. After visiting the beautiful waterfalls, we’ll set off to search for the plane wreck at Sólheimasandur. The South Coast’s black-sand beach is vast, stretching about 10 kilometers across. The sand is made of volcanic material from the famous Sólheimajökull Glacier. There are no landmarks on Sólheimasandur’s black-sand beach, just endless black sand, which is why people say it feels like the end of the world. After visiting the plane wreck, we’ll return to the minibus and head to Sólheimajökull Glacier. Your guide will lead you on a short walk to the closest accessible point to the glacier tongue, where you can admire the remarkable sight of it slowly flowing into the glacial river. It’s also a perfect spot for photos. Another stop on this tour is the famous Reynisfjara black-sand beach, which stretches for several kilometers. It is actually on the same coastline as the beach where the plane wreck is located, just 20 kilometers away. From the beach, you can see the impressive natural rock pillars of Reynisdrangar, basalt caves, the mysterious stone arch at Dyrhólaey in the distance, and adorable puffins in summer. After an exciting day of exploration, we’ll return to Reykjavík along the same route, taking in the day’s beautiful scenery once more. Back in the capital, your guide will drop everyone off at their respective locations. What to bring: The tour lasts approximately 12 hours in total. We recommend bringing warm outdoor clothing, waterproof clothing, a hat, gloves, and sturdy hiking boots. If you don’t have these items, you can rent clothing and hiking boots from us when booking the tour.
