Itinerary details
After breakfast, visit Arrowtown, 21 km from Queenstown. Many of Arrowtown’s historic sites are well preserved, and some are still in daily use. Stroll along the Arrow River and reflect on the hardships faced by the thousands of Chinese miners who once lived here—their simple village still stands beside the river. Buckingham Street is the town’s main street, reflecting the efforts of local residents to preserve its prosperous past. Historic buildings line the street, home to an array of shops and restaurants. In the afternoon, head to Lake Wanaka, New Zealand’s fourth-largest lake, and get up close to the “loneliest tree.” The majestic Southern Alps surround Lake Wanaka. Immerse yourself in this secluded paradise, stroll along the lakeshore, admire the lake’s crystal-clear waters and soak up the local atmosphere. Travel to Tekapo, a stargazing town, to admire Lake Tekapo, the South Island’s most beautiful destination for stargazing and lakeside scenery. The name Tekapo comes from Māori and means “night mat,” and is also translated as “a place to sleep under the stars.” Look up at the sky in Tekapo and watch the star clusters twinkle and the Milky Way flow overhead. You’ll feel as though you’re among the stars, with your thoughts drifting away. Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd, the most famous landmark on the shores of Lake Tekapo. After a delicious salmon set meal for dinner, check into a distinctive lakeside holiday home. At this world-famous Dark Sky Reserve, you can enjoy the pristine, boundless sea of stars. Open your window that night and gaze up at the Milky Way cascading overhead, experiencing the romance of “falling asleep beneath the stars.” You’ll be glad you finally gave yourself this opportunity.
