Pompeii is an ancient city with a long history in the Campania region, in the southwestern corner of the Apennine Peninsula. It lies about 240 km northwest of Rome, near Naples in southern Italy and 10 km southwest of Mount Vesuvius. About 20 km west of the picturesque Bay of Naples, it is a seaside resort backed by mountains. Founded in the 6th century BC, it was destroyed by the major eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. However, it was buried in volcanic ash, which helped preserve its streets and buildings remarkably well. Archaeological excavations have continued since 1748, providing important resources for understanding the social life and culture of ancient Rome.
