Set off early in the morning after meeting your friendly, knowledgeable professional guide in Rome. Travel along the Autostrada del Sole through the scenic Roman countryside. On the way, enjoy the beautiful rural scenery of the Castelli Romani, nestled between two ancient towns. On the way to Naples, you’ll also catch a distant view of the Abbey of Montecassino, perched on a hill. This majestic abbey is not only striking to behold but also holds an important place in Italian history. Upon arrival in Pompeii, begin your visit to the world-famous archaeological site. In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted suddenly, burying the thriving ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic ash, which miraculously preserved them to this day. Led by your guide, you’ll explore this ancient city frozen in time and experience the scale of an ancient Roman city and the lives of its residents. Pompeii is renowned for its excellent state of preservation. As you wander through the ruins, you’ll see well-preserved frescoes, homes, villas, public baths and remnants of streets. Even more astonishingly, traces of the residents, livestock and everyday food lost in the disaster have been preserved here, making it feel as if you’ve traveled back in time to witness a moment in history from nearly 2,000 years ago. After your visit, return to the tour bus for the journey back to Rome. This wonderful day trip will introduce you to Pompeii, an astonishing archaeological wonder. Pompeii is an ancient city with a long history in the Campania region, in the southwestern corner of the Apennine Peninsula. It lies about 240 km northwest of Rome, near Naples in southern Italy and 10 km southwest of Mount Vesuvius. About 20 km west of the picturesque Bay of Naples, it is a seaside resort backed by mountains. Founded in the 6th century BC, it was destroyed by the major eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. However, it was buried in volcanic ash, which helped preserve its streets and buildings remarkably well. Archaeological excavations have continued since 1748, providing important resources for understanding the social life and culture of ancient Rome.
