The Gothic south tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) rises 138 meters above the city, while Schönbrunn Palace (Schönbrunn), the Habsburg summer residence, has 1,441 rooms. This stretch of the Danube has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 07:00 River cruise breakfast 09:00 Admire the terraced vineyards along both banks, then explore the small towns of the Wachau Valley on foot and experience the perfect blend of the Danube, vineyards, and castles. Walk to Melk Abbey on your own (exterior view). This Benedictine abbey stands high on a hill overlooking the Danube. Its striking ochre-yellow exterior and magnificent architecture are breathtaking, making it a masterpiece of Baroque architecture! Cross the Prelate’s Court and climb the richly decorated Imperial Staircase, then follow the approximately 200-meter-long corridor. Portraits of Austrian rulers hang along both sides. Next, visit the library, whose ceiling is decorated with frescoes by Paul Troger and which houses more than 90,000 books. From the abbey’s terrace, take in spectacular views of the Danube. The awe-inspiring Baroque buildings you see today were constructed between 1702 and 1736 and feature exquisite frescoes, while the library holds countless medieval manuscripts. Thanks to its prestige and scholarly importance, Melk Abbey escaped the mass dissolution of Austrian monasteries under Joseph II between 1780 and 1790, and also survived the Napoleonic Wars. Return to the river cruise ship after your visit. 19:00 Enjoy dinner aboard the river cruise. Sail overnight to Linz.
