A captivating journey through southern Galicia and northern Portugal
Set off on a journey through the borderlands and explore southern Galicia (known as the Rías Baixas) and northern Portugal. Discover unique landscapes, famous landmarks, charming towns, and authentic cuisine.
Vigo
Galicia’s largest port city, where industry meets maritime charm. Stroll along the cobbled streets of the old town and explore fishing-port culture and traditional markets. The viewpoint on Mount Castro (O Castro) offers sweeping views of the harbor and is the best place to experience the city’s spirit.
Cambados
Known as the “capital of Albariño,” this is one of Galicia’s most prestigious white wine regions. Ancient stone houses, vine-lined lanes and sea breezes set the scene for winery visits and tastings that reveal a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition and distinctive terroir.
Mount Santa Trega
Rising 341 meters above the Spanish-Portuguese border, Mount Santa Trega offers the best vantage point for viewing the meeting of the Miño River and the Atlantic Ocean. The summit is not only blessed with spectacular views but is also home to ancient Celtic ruins dating back to before the Common Era—a perfect blend of nature and history.
A Guarda
The southwesternmost fishing village in Galicia, renowned for its abundant seafood and rich cultural heritage. It’s an excellent place to sample fresh octopus and shellfish. The relaxed seaside promenade is perfect for slowing down and enjoying the tranquility of the harbor.
Baiona
Historically the first landing point on Columbus’s return voyage, this town boasts a well-preserved medieval fortress (Monterrei Castle) and a seafront promenade steeped in history. Its picturesque bay brings together stories of seafaring, war, and peace.
O Grove & Arousa Bay
Known as a “seafood paradise,” O Grove lies on the Arousa estuary. Take a boat trip for a close-up view of the floating mussel-farming platforms known as “bateas,” and enjoy freshly cooked mussels with local white wine on board—a quintessential Galician experience.
Pontevedra
This cultural city is known as the “city of walkers.” Its well-preserved old town is steeped in art and history. Santa María Cathedral, the fountain square and sculpted streets make you feel as though you have stepped into the Middle Ages.
Combarro
One of Galicia’s most iconic stone-house villages, it is known for rows of traditional seaside granaries called “hórreos” and stone crosses known as “cruceiros.” At sunset, waves gently lap against the stone seawalls, creating a peaceful, captivating scene.
A Coruña
A city of sea breezes, home to the ancient Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hércules), a World Heritage Site. Stroll along Marina Avenue and admire the “glass balconies,” while the old port district and modern shopping streets showcase the city’s dual character.
Santiago de Compostela
Spain’s most important pilgrimage destination, with a cathedral that is a dream destination for Catholics around the world. Its medieval architectural ensemble is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—a distillation of history, faith and architectural artistry.
Valença Fortress - Portugal
A Portuguese border town on the northern bank of the Minho River, with a remarkably preserved star-shaped fortress and winding streets—an ideal place to explore the history of Portugal and Spain. From the ramparts, look out over the Spanish town of Tui and experience the charm of a border that crosses countries, but not cultures.
Albariño Winery
Explore the renowned Rías Baixas D.O. wine region in Galicia, visit an authentic winery, and learn about the distinctive terroir of Albariño grapes and the winemaking process. Paired with local tapas, it’s a feast for the senses.
