To conclude the trip, we’ll spend a full day exploring the city at a relaxed pace, discovering the old town of Lisbon and savoring the blend of classical and modern beauty in Portugal’s capital.
This carefully curated tour combines natural scenery, history, culture, architecture, and religious heritage, making it an ideal choice for your first exploration of Portugal.
Sintra National Palace
Once the Portuguese royal family’s summer retreat, this palace is known for its towering white twin chimneys and distinctive Moorish and Gothic styles. Its richly decorated interiors feature tiles, domes, and murals that reflect the splendor of medieval royal life. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is an ideal window into Portugal’s royal history.
Historic town of Óbidos
Perched on a hill and surrounded by sturdy ancient walls, this medieval town features cobbled streets, white houses adorned with flowers, charming bookstores, and craft shops. The whole town feels like a fairytale, with a romantic atmosphere at every turn. The spring cherry liqueur festival and Christmas market add an extra touch of magic to this historic town.
Sanctuary of Fátima
Portugal’s best-known religious pilgrimage center attracts thousands of believers each year. It became a sacred site after three young shepherd children reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1917. Its imposing, sacred shrine has a solemn and reverent atmosphere, making it an ideal place to explore faith and find inner peace.
Belém district and landmarks commemorating the Age of Discoveries
This is where Portugal’s Age of Discoveries began, and where many great explorers set sail. Belém Tower stands on the banks of the Tagus, symbolizing exploration and protection of the sea. The grand monastery is an architectural landmark of the golden age of exploration, while the Monument to the Discoveries bears the names of many heroic explorers as a tribute to them. Don’t forget to try the Portuguese custard tarts from a century-old bakery—they’re renowned for their flaky, sweet flavor.
Coastal towns of Cascais and Estoril
An upscale Atlantic resort destination, once a favorite summer retreat of European royalty and high society. Cascais is known for its charming fishing harbor and artistic atmosphere, with galleries and distinctive cafés tucked along its narrow streets. Estoril, meanwhile, offers beautiful beaches and a stylish casino, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and elegance.
Cliffside views at Boca do Inferno
This natural cliffside opening was formed by the erosion caused by waves crashing against the rocks over many years. When the sea is rough, it roars like the “Mouth of Hell,” creating a powerful and dramatic spectacle. From the cliff’s edge, look out over the Atlantic, where sea and sky merge—a striking example of nature’s artistry.
Lisbon Old Town and Landmark Tour
Portugal’s capital blends historic charm with modern energy. The winding streets of its old quarters are traversed by trams, while the Alfama district retains its traditional pace of life, and locals can often be heard singing fado in the streets. Landmarks are found throughout the city, from views of the old town from the Santa Justa Lift to Restauradores Square, Marquês de Pombal Square, and the shopping district along Avenida da Liberdade. Every step is filled with culture and everyday life. In the evening, stroll along the Tagus River and enjoy the sunset, experiencing the most authentic Portuguese romance.
