Embark on a cultural journey across the Castilian plateau and discover some of Spain's most representative historic heritage sites. Wander along Salamanca's cobbled streets and trace the origins of the Spanish language; visit Zamora, the city of Romanesque architecture, and the religious sanctuary of Alba de Tormes; then explore historic cities such as Tordesillas and Valladolid, where medieval power and faith intertwined in a glorious past.
With a moderate pace, this carefully selected itinerary brings together the cultural highlights of language, architecture, and faith—an unmissable journey into Castilian civilization
Salamanca
One of the most culturally rich ancient cities in central Spain and the soul of Castile and León. As the cradle of the Spanish language and home to one of Europe's oldest universities, it combines a strong academic heritage with magnificent religious art. Plaza Mayor is the heart of the city, bustling by day and enchanting under the lights at night. The Old and New Cathedrals stand side by side, showcasing the evolution of architecture from Romanesque to Baroque. Casa de las Conchas is one of the city's symbols, its façade covered in shell motifs that represent protection along the pilgrimage route. A legend about a “frog statue” hidden in front of the old university draws countless visitors to look up in search of it. Strolling among its literary heritage and stone walls feels like traveling through the history of Spanish culture.
Ciudad Rodrigo (Ciudad Rodrigo)
A medieval military city that guarded Spain’s western frontier, near the border with Portugal. Ancient defensive walls surround the entire city and remain remarkably intact. The city’s cathedral is imposing and solemn, while its castle rises above the valley. Cobblestone streets and historic homes bring the past vividly to life. Here, religious heritage stands alongside the legacy of the bloodshed and turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars. Today, it is a peaceful, serene little city, rich in stories and dignity.
Béjar (Béjar)
Nestled in a valley, this historic town is known for its medieval textile industry. Once an important industrial center in Castile, it now attracts visitors with its ancient bridge, old city walls, peaceful parks, and artistic atmosphere. The town's Church of San Juan and old quarter are built into the hillside, making them ideal for photography and leisurely walks. With fresh air and an unhurried pace, it's perfect for a short escape from the bustle of the city.
La Alberca (La Alberca)
A Castilian village that has truly preserved its medieval character, and the first village in Spain to be designated a National Historic-Artistic Site. Its houses retain traditional black timber beams and stonework, while narrow lanes crisscross the village and locals often gather to chat in the square. It draws visitors not only with its beautiful architecture, but also with its authentic ham culture and religious festivals. Tradition and faith are alive here—warm and genuine.
Valladolid (Valladolid)
The former royal capital of Castile was once the political heart of the Spanish Empire, and the city where Columbus died and Cervantes settled. Today, it still retains its imposing historic character. The Church of San Pablo is renowned for its intricately carved Gothic façade, while the spacious, stately Plaza Mayor is the city’s hub of activity. A city where old and new intertwine, Valladolid is also a popular destination for wine, gastronomy, and theater festivals.
Tordesillas (Tordesillas)
It went down in history with the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas, which defined the colonial spheres of Spain and Portugal in the New World. This small city is steeped in royal and diplomatic history; Queen Joanna spent her lonely final years here. Stroll through the city center to see the former royal palace and monasteries, while the Duero River flows quietly beyond the city, witness to the division of the Western world.
Segovia (Segovia)
One of Spain’s most visually striking historic cities. Its most famous landmark is the remarkably well-preserved Roman aqueduct, built in the 1st century AD without mortar and still standing after two thousand years. The Alcázar, perched on a cliff, looks as if it came straight out of a fairy tale and is said to have inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. The cathedral beside the main square is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture. Every street and every paving stone tells a story of imperial grandeur.
Ávila (Ávila)
A walled city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 2.5-kilometer medieval walls remain intact, with 88 towers that make a striking impression. Ávila is the birthplace of Saint Teresa, who left a lasting mark on religious reform and mysticism. The city has a solemn, tranquil atmosphere, with churches and monasteries throughout, serving as symbols of faith and serenity.
Zamora
Known as the “City of Romanesque Churches,” it preserves more than 20 churches in the 12th-century style, making it a paradise for architecture lovers. The city overlooks the Duero River, whose picturesque banks are especially inviting for morning and evening strolls. The castle, cathedral, and Church of La Magdalena form a distinctive religious architectural ensemble, while contemporary art and traditional festivals bring the city to life.
Alba de Tormes (Alba de Tormes)
A quiet town on the banks of the Tormes River, and the final home of Saint Teresa. The monastery here houses her relics, including her heart and hand, and is a place of pilgrimage for many believers. Though small, it is filled with reverence and warmth, telling a story of faith and perseverance.
