The Palace Museum, Beijing
A symbol of China’s imperial power, the Forbidden City is the largest and best-preserved ancient palace complex in the world. It has more than 8,700 rooms, with magnificent gilded halls and a meticulously planned layout, and witnessed the fortunes and tribulations of 24 emperors across the Ming and Qing dynasties. Stroll before the Hall of Supreme Harmony and through the Imperial Garden, and it feels as though you have stepped into the pages of history, exploring the power and wisdom behind royal life.
Tiananmen Square
The world’s grandest urban square, located in the heart of the capital. The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Monument to the People’s Heroes, and Great Hall of the People surround it, making it a solemn national symbol. Every raising of the national flag awakens a sense of love for country and home. It is an essential stop for every traveler.
Temple of Heaven Park
The site of grand ceremonies where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties “worshipped Heaven” and “prayed for good harvests,” this is the highest-ranking ancient sacrificial complex in China. The blue glazed tiles of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests complement the vast sky, while the Echo Wall and Three-Sound Stone embody ancient Chinese ideas about the relationship between Heaven and Earth and the pursuit of harmony. It is a perfect blend of Chinese architectural aesthetics and philosophical thought.
Dashilan Street
One of old Beijing’s most vibrant commercial streets, it has been bustling with crowds and lined with shops since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Here, you can sample authentic Beijing snacks and experience traditional crafts, including paper-cutting, shadow puppetry, and the unique charm of time-honored Chinese medicine shops. It offers the most down-to-earth taste of Beijing.
Mutianyu Great Wall (round-trip cable car + shuttle bus included)
Hailed as “the Great Wall stretches for thousands of miles, but Mutianyu stands out,” this section of the Wall winds across the mountains and is lined with watchtowers, combining a rich sense of history with spectacular natural scenery. Take the cable car to the top and take in the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, while experiencing the spirit and thrill of the saying, “He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true hero.”
Beijing Hutong Rickshaw Ride & Courtyard Home Experience
Hop on a traditional Beijing rickshaw and wind through narrow hutong lanes, experiencing the old capital’s slower pace and the everyday life of old Beijing. Step inside a typical siheyuan courtyard home to see its gray walls, tiled roofs, wooden windows and carved details. Learn about the traditional Beijing residential layout known as “left ancestral hall, right family shrine” and soak up the city’s distinctive local character.
Shichahai & Yandai Xiejie
Shichahai is one of the areas where Beijing’s historic waterways are best preserved. With shimmering lakes, flowing streams, and small bridges, it is also home to the former residences of many notable figures. Nearby Yandai Xiejie is charmingly old-fashioned, lined with shops, and an excellent place to experience Beijing’s folk culture and take photos.
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda & Square
Built during the Tang Dynasty, this is where the eminent monk Xuanzang translated Buddhist scriptures and enshrined Buddhist relics after returning from India. Its dignified, simple form has stood tall through a millennium of wind and rain. The square’s fountains and light show bring history and modernity together. It is a cultural symbol and spiritual landmark of Xi’an.
Xi’an Ancient City Wall (exterior view)
China’s most complete and magnificent surviving ancient city wall, built during the Ming dynasty and encircling Xi’an’s entire old city. Take in the four corner watchtowers from above and experience the ancient city’s defensive ingenuity and military might along this cultural corridor through time.
Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum (Terracotta Warriors Museum; electric shuttle included)
Hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Terracotta Army has lain dormant for thousands of years. Its lifelike soldiers, each with a distinct expression, seem ready to march into battle, forming the most powerful guard for the mausoleum of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. The site offers a breathtaking glimpse into ancient pottery craftsmanship, military organization, and imperial grandeur.
Muslim Quarter & Bell and Drum Tower Square
Xi’an’s most popular food and cultural district, where Muslim traditions blend with local customs. The Bell Tower and Drum Tower stand side by side, adding even more charm after dark. Sample a variety of snacks as you stroll, including barbecue, flatbread, roujiamo, and liangpi, and experience Xi’an one bite at a time.
